Applying Salutogenesis Principles in Design*

As interior designers, we play a crucial role in shaping environments that promote health and well-being. The salutogenesis model, coined by sociologist Aaron Antonovsky, offers valuable insights into designing spaces that foster a sense of coherence, manageability, and meaningfulness.

This concept emerged from Antonovsky’s study of Holocaust survivors, exploring how some individuals maintained their emotional health despite extreme stress. The idea is to ask how can you support your health instead of what is causing the illness.

Key Principles

Comprehensibility: Design spaces with clear navigation and intuitive layouts.
Manageability: Provide users with control over their environment, such as adjustable lighting or temperature.
Meaningfulness: Incorporate elements that promote emotional connection, like natural light or art.

Design Applications

Workspaces: Create areas that promote focus, collaboration, and relaxation.
Healthcare environments: Design spaces that reduce stress and promote healing.
Residential design: Incorporate elements that promote comfort, relaxation, and social connection.

Incorporating Salutogenesis in Your Design

• Conduct user research to understand needs and preferences.
• Design for flexibility and adaptability.
• Incorporate natural elements and materials.
• Consider the impact of color, texture, and lighting on user experience.

By applying these principles, we can create spaces that support overall well-being and promote a sense of coherence.

When you work with us, you see these ideas in action. We believe in getting to know you, learning how you want to experience your space, and setting expectations to suit your specific needs, before we start pulling together your custom design.
